“Mama, can I read Quran?”

I nearly dropped my coffee. Sara sat in the backseat, her school bag resting beside her, kicking her feet against the seat in a rhythmic pattern. I turned my head slightly, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

“Right now?” I asked.

“Yes,” she said, her voice firm. “In the car.”

Of all the places. We had a whole setup at home—her little desk by the window, a special lamp, even a beautiful Quran stand I had picked out with so much care. But more often than not, when I asked her to sit and read, she resisted.

“I’m tired.”

“Can we do it later?”

“I don’t feel like it right now.”

Excuses stacked upon each other like building blocks. I worried, as any mother would. Was she losing her connection with the Quran? Was I doing something wrong? But now, out of nowhere, she wanted to recite—on the way to school, amidst honking cars and traffic lights?

I hesitated but reached for my phone instead of my bag. “Here,” I said, handing it to her. “You can open your Quran lesson.”

Sara’s face lit up. She unlocked the screen, navigated to her favorite Quran lesson video, and pressed play. The familiar voice of her teacher filled the car, reciting slowly, guiding her through the words. She followed along, whispering the verses, her eyes locked on the screen. Her fingers traced invisible lines in the air, mimicking the script on the screen.

I glanced in the rearview mirror. She wasn’t just listening—she was absorbing. Focused. Engaged. Enjoying it. It was an odd sight, yet something about it felt right.

A New Ritual

The next day, it happened again.

And the day after that.

Soon, it became our ritual. As soon as we buckled up, she would ask for my phone, open her lesson, and start practicing. Some days, she repeated after her teacher; other days, she hummed along, perfecting her pronunciation. I kept my charger handy now, making sure my phone always had enough battery for our drives.

At first, I wrestled with the idea. Shouldn't the Quran be read from a Mushaf in a more structured, respectful setting? Shouldn’t it be part of a dedicated time, with focus and stillness?

But then, one morning, I watched her in the mirror. She wasn’t just using a device—she was connecting. No fidgeting, no wandering thoughts. The outside world blurred, and she was lost in the rhythm of the verses. And I realized something—

Maybe the car was her quiet place.

At home, distractions were everywhere—homework, toys, the call of the television, the lure of running around in the backyard. But in the car, there was nothing but the road ahead. Maybe that was where her heart found stillness. Maybe, for her, the car was the best place to connect with the Quran.

A Lesson in Letting Go

I thought about the stories of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and how he met people where they were. How he nurtured love for Allah through kindness, not force. The goal was never to mold our children into one rigid method of learning, but to help them find their own path to loving the Quran.

And so, I let go of my expectations. I embraced our new habit, our stolen moments between red lights and green ones. Because in the end, it wasn’t about how she learned. It was that she learned at all.

One day, after finishing a verse, she looked up and smiled.

“Mama, I like learning in the car.”

I smiled back, slowing down just a little, hoping to stretch the moment. “Me too, sweetheart. Me too.”

The Deeper Lesson

How often do we, as parents, insist that learning must look a certain way? That our children should connect with faith in the way we envision, at the time and place we deem appropriate? But what if their connection to the Quran is forming in ways we never expected? What if our role is not to control but to nurture—wherever that growth happens?

Faith is not confined to a prayer mat. The love for the Quran is not limited to a study desk. Sometimes, a child finds their connection with Allah in the simplest, most unconventional moments—on a car ride, between stoplights, in the middle of a busy morning.

So, the real question is: Are we recognizing these moments for what they are? Or are we too busy trying to shape them into something else?

I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t changed the words. But I had changed the delivery — aligning my mouth, tongue, lips, and throat to the rules passed down from the Prophet ﷺ through generations. Just by learning to recite the "ق" with proper heaviness, or elongating the madd in “’a-lladhī khalaqa,” something inside the words woke up. It wasn’t me. It was the Quran, finally speaking through me — not with mistakes, not muffled by foreign habits, but with clarity and soul.

That moment stayed with me for days. Not because Sara cried — children cry often — but because she couldn’t explain why. It wasn’t the meaning she grasped. It was something else. The way the words came alive. The emotion tucked between syllables. The rise and fall. The invisible pull of divine cadence.

That’s when it truly struck me: every language carries an emotional code — not just in the words, but in how those words are delivered.

In English, for example, imagine the difference between saying “I’m fine” with a sigh versus with a steady voice and eye contact. Same words. Entirely different meanings. One reveals exhaustion, the other resolve. The emotion is carried not just in vocabulary, but in voice, pacing, and expression. That’s how language becomes more than information — it becomes experience.

Now imagine Arabic — a language chosen by Allah Himself for the final revelation. Arabic doesn’t just carry meaning in its words; it stores emotion, weight, beauty, and complexity in each root, each sound, each pause.

So you see — when we recite the Quran, there are two deep oceans we are standing before:

1. The depth of the Quran itself — its message, its light, its timeless call to the soul.

2. The depth of the Arabic language — the sacred vessel Allah chose for that message.

When we lack understanding of either, we miss something essential. It's like having the words of a song but not the melody, or the melody but not the lyrics. To truly connect, you need both.

And Arabic — it’s not just any language. According to a linguistic study conducted by the University of California, Arabic is among the top five most complex languages in the world based on grammar richness, morphological variation, and semantic depth. While English has around 600,000 words (many of which are rarely used), Arabic has over 12 million recorded words and derivatives, making it the most lexically rich language according to a report published by Al Jazeera Arabic in 2016. That’s not just complexity — that’s divine design.

So why do we, Muslims of a fast-moving, highly educated world — the same people who dive deep into science, technology, business, and medicine — treat Quran learning like a side hobby?

When Allah will ask:

"With the intelligence and brilliance I gave you, how much of it did you spend to understand My message? To live it? To teach it?"

What will we say?

We prepare for job interviews, we study for years to understand human knowledge, but how much have we invested to understand the eternal knowledge sent by our Creator?

Let’s not wait to be embarrassed on the Day when the only currency will be our efforts.

If we truly love the Quran, we owe it our best — including the effort to learn its language. Not for fluency. But for connection. For depth. For Sara’s tears to make sense. For our hearts to finally hear what our tongues have been reciting.

"Assalamu Alaikum, my dear chatterbox! What made you call at this hour?"
A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she shifted comfortably, twirling the edge of her sleeve between her fingers.

But the moment she heard the first shaky breath on the other end, her smile vanished.

"Aymen… Aymen…" Azizah’s voice cracked, trembling and weak. Then came the sobs—raw, unrestrained, breaking through in uneven gasps.

Aymen immediately sat up, her heart tightening. "Azizah? What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Talk to me!"

Her fingers clutched the phone tighter, her voice laced with worry.

"Aymen… Ali—Ali was hit by a car!" Azizah’s words tumbled out between sobs. "He’s badly injured. They—they took him to the hospital, and I just got the call. I don’t know what to do. Please, Aymen, come! You and Hasan, please take me to him! I—I can’t think, I can’t breathe!"

A cold wave of shock rushed through Aymen. She gripped the phone, feeling as if the air had been knocked out of her.

"Azizah, listen to me. Breathe. We’re coming. Just hold on, alright? We’ll be there in minutes!"
She assured, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the panic clawing at her chest.

She didn’t waste another second. Jumping to her feet, she sprinted toward the TV lounge. The room was dim, the low hum of the ceiling fan barely masking the pounding of her heart.

"Hasan, we have to go! Right now!" She called out, urgency shaking her voice.

Hasan, lounging on the couch with his eyes on the TV screen, turned his head sharply at the alarm in her tone. His brows furrowed, concern flickering in his eyes.
"Aymen, what happened?"

She swallowed hard, trying to keep her breath steady. "It’s Azizah… Ali’s been in an accident. He was hit by a car. He’s in the hospital, and she’s panicking. We need to get her there—now!"

Hasan’s expression changed in an instant—his body tensed, jaw tightening. Without hesitation, he grabbed his car keys from the side table. "Let’s go."

Aymen wrapped her scarf hastily, fingers fumbling in her rush. Her mind raced, still processing Azizah’s frantic cries.

One moment, everything had been normal. The next, their peaceful Ramadan night had turned into a nightmare.

As they rushed out the door, one thought echoed in her mind—
"Ya Allah, let Ali be okay."

Hasan rushed toward the front door.

"I'll let Ami and Abu know," Aymen said quickly before following him.

Within minutes, Hasan and Aymen arrived at Azizah’s house. She stood by the door, her face pale, hands trembling. Aymen immediately wrapped an arm around her.

"Ali will be okay, Azizah. You have to stay strong," she reassured her.

Azizah gave a weak nod, but her tears didn’t stop. Silent sobs racked her body as she clutched Aymen’s arm.

The three of them got into the car, and within moments, they reached the hospital.

At the front desk, Hasan leaned forward urgently. "Ali—Ali Khan. We need to know his condition!"

The receptionist checked her records and replied, "He’s in the emergency room."

Without wasting a second, they rushed toward the emergency ward.

As soon as they entered, their eyes fell on Ali. He was lying on a hospital bed, eyes closed. A doctor stood beside him, scribbling notes while a nurse adjusted the IV.

The moment the doctor turned, Hasan stepped forward. "Doctor, he's my friend. What happened? How serious are his injuries?" His voice carried deep concern.

The doctor sighed, his expression calm. "Your friend is very lucky. The accident was bad, but his injuries aren’t severe."

"Alhamdulillah!" The relieved exclamation left Azizah’s, Aymen’s, and Hasan’s lips at the same time.

The doctor continued, "Right now, he’s under the effect of medication and resting. We’ll keep him under observation for a while, but if all goes well, you can take him home soon. However, he will need a lot of care."

Hasan shook the doctor’s hand. "Thank you so much, doctor."

Azizah let out a shaky breath, covering her mouth as fresh tears welled up in her eyes. She broke down, her body trembling as relief and exhaustion finally took over.

Aymen didn’t think twice. She pulled her into a tight embrace. "Don’t worry, Azizah. Allah has been merciful. Ali is safe."

Azizah sniffled, her voice barely above a whisper. "But… how did this even happen?"

Azizah took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "I don’t know," she whispered, her voice hollow. "After Iftar, Ali left for a meeting. It was only half an hour later that I got the call from the hospital."

Her hands trembled as she wiped the fresh tears spilling from her eyes.

Hasan, watching her closely, turned to Aymen. "I’ll get her some water," he said softly.

Aymen nodded as Hasan walked off, then gently guided Azizah to a row of chairs in the hospital corridor. She kept hold of her hand, feeling its icy coldness.

A few minutes later, Hasan returned with a small bottle of water, handing it to Azizah.

"There’s a masjid a short distance from here," he said, checking the time. "I’ll join Isha and Taraweeh there. Call me if anything urgent happens."

Aymen and Azizah both nodded. As Hasan walked away, Aymen’s gaze followed him down the corridor until he disappeared through the doors.

Azizah, as if the exhaustion had finally caught up with her, rested her head on Aymen’s shoulder.

Aymen looked down at her friend’s tear-streaked face, and a flood of thoughts washed over her.

The same face that had been beaming with laughter this morning was now drowning in sorrow. How unpredictable life is. We plan one thing, but something entirely different happens.

Her gaze softened as she thought about the nature of relationships. How strange and yet how beautiful they are.

A husband and wife—once complete strangers—become bound so deeply that their joys and sorrows merge into one. Their happiness intertwines, their grief becomes shared. These bonds are both fragile and precious. They give life meaning.

And in that moment, Aymen recalled her own struggles from the day before—the feeling of being overwhelmed by responsibilities, the endless demands of home and family.

But now, as she sat in this cold hospital corridor, a realization struck her.

These relationships are not burdens. They are blessings.

They are the very essence of life, the reason we feel love, care, and belonging. This is why Allah has called them Huqooq-ul-Ibaad—the rights of His servants.

Without relationships, who would be there in our times of need? How terrifying would loneliness be?

As her thoughts carried her away, another wave of realization hit her.

The responsibilities of home, of Zayn and Sara, the noise, the endless tasks—all of it is better than sitting in the still, heavy silence of a hospital.

And then, a verse from the Quran echoed in her mind:

فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
"So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?" (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:13)

A lump formed in her throat.

Ya Allah, thank You for every blessing. We are the ones who fail to see them.

Just then, Hasan returned, his expression lighter than before.

"I spoke to the doctor. Ali is conscious now, and they’re ready to discharge him. He’s going to be okay."

Azizah gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "Alhamdulillah!" she whispered, tears spilling once again—this time from relief.

Aymen squeezed her hand. "See? Allah is merciful."

After completing the formalities, they helped Ali into the car. Aymen sat in the front with Hasan, while Azizah sat in the back, holding Ali’s hand tightly—clutching it as if she had been given back something too precious to lose.

Aymen noticed the gesture and smiled to herself.

This night had been overwhelming, but for some reason, she felt a deep clarity within.

By the time they dropped off Azizah and Ali at their home and returned to their own, the house was quiet. Zayn and Sara were already asleep, while Ami and Abu waited in the lounge, concern evident on their faces.

After reassuring them that Ali was out of danger, Aymen and Hasan finally went to their room.

They were exhausted. A few whispered words between them, and soon, sleep took over.

The Next Morning – Suhoor Time

The loud chime of the alarm pulled Aymen out of sleep. She groggily reached for her phone and silenced it.

After making wudu, she stood on the prayer mat, offering her Tahajjud salah.

Ya Allah, thank You for Your blessings. Forgive me for my weaknesses. Help me to be grateful always.

As she finished her du’a and stepped toward the kitchen, she felt lighter, more at peace.

But as soon as she reached the doorway, her eyes widened in shock. What she saw in the kitchen shocked her to the core.

But why? What had happened?

“Aymen, hurry up! We’re about to win this round!” her younger brother cheered, barely looking up.

Aymen froze, watching her tiny hands grab the dice, that bright, carefree smile on her face. The excitement, the teasing, the lightness of waiting for Iftar as a child—it all hit her like a wave.

Then, a smell drifted through the air.

The sizzle of spices, the rich aroma of lentil soup, crispy samosas, warm bread baking in the oven. Her chest tightened.

She followed the scent, her feet moving on instinct toward the kitchen. And there she was—Mama. Standing by the stove, stirring a pot, the way she always did, humming softly under her breath.

Aymen inhaled sharply. “Mama…”

Her mother turned, eyes lighting up with the same warm smile she knew so well. “Aymen! Come in, sweetheart.”

She hesitated, taking in every detail. The way Mama wiped her hands on her apron, the soft glow of the kitchen, the clatter of dishes in the background.

Mama tilted her head. “Why do you look so serious, sweetheart?”

Aymen swallowed hard. “I just… I miss this. I miss being a kid. I miss not having to think about a million things all at once.”

Mama chuckled, shaking her head. “Do you know why you never had to worry about anything back then?”

Aymen shook her head.

“Because your Baba and I did all the worrying for you,” Mama said softly, placing a hand on her cheek. “We made sure you had everything you needed—school, food, a happy home. That’s what parents do, sweetheart.”

A lump formed in Aymen’s throat.

“And now, it’s your turn,” Mama continued, her voice gentle but firm. “You’re the one making sure your kids feel safe, feel loved. But don’t wear yourself out thinking it’s just a job, Aymen. Live it. Enjoy it. This is a phase, and it’ll pass before you know it. One day, they’ll be grown, just like you are now, and you’ll wish you could come back to these moments.”

Aymen felt her eyes sting. She wanted to say something, anything, but the words wouldn’t come.

Mama turned back to the stove, humming again, as if the conversation had been nothing more than an everyday chat.

Then—

Ring! Ring! Ring!

The sharp chime of her alarm snapped her awake.

She sat up, breath shaky, the dream still wrapped around her like a soft blanket. Pressing a hand to her chest, she exhaled slowly.

Time to wake the kids.

She padded softly to their rooms, smiling to herself. “Zayn, Sara, up you get! Time for Suhoor.”

They groaned, half-asleep, but soon stumbled to the dining table, where Hasan was already pouring water into glasses. As they ate, Aymen watched them, really watched them, her mother’s words playing over in her mind.

After Zuhr prayer, as she sat on the prayer mat reciting Quran, the doorbell rang.

She frowned. Who could that be?

Opening the door, she found Azizah standing there, her ever-smiling, talkative neighbor.

“Ramadan Kareem, Aymen!” Azizah beamed, holding up a small package.

“Ramadan Kareem,” Aymen greeted back, taking it. “What’s this?”

“Dates! Thought I’d drop off a little Ramadan treat,” Azizah said cheerfully, stepping inside.

Aymen chuckled, leading her to the couch.

“So, what’s up?” Azizah asked, plopping down comfortably.

Aymen smiled. “Zayn and Sara are fasting for the first time today. Just making sure everything feels special for them.”

Azizah’s eyes lit up. “Oh, that’s amazing! First fasts are always a big deal.”

After chatting about neighborhood gossip and Ramadan prep, Azizah left, and Aymen turned back to the kitchen. Her mother’s words echoed in her mind as she prepped for Iftar, and for the first time, she found herself smiling instead of feeling overwhelmed.

As Maghrib azan filled the air, the whole family gathered at the table. Grandpa Ahmed leaned forward. “So, tell me, how’d the first fast go?”

Zayn grinned. “It was tough, Dada, but Mama kept us going all day.”

Aymen’s heart swelled.

After Iftar, Grandma Fatima pulled out two small envelopes. “For your first fast,” she said, handing them to the kids.

Excited giggles filled the room.

Just as Aymen finished Maghrib prayer, her phone rang.

Azizah.

She picked up, expecting another lively chat. But the voice on the other end was trembling.

She was crying.

Aymen’s stomach dropped. “Azizah? What’s wrong?”

Azizah’s voice cracked. “Aymen… I—I don’t know what to do.”

Aymen gripped the phone tighter. “Azizah, talk to me. What happened?”

The words landed like a spark, igniting excitement in the room. Almost instantly, Aymen’s phone vibrated violently against the coffee table. One after another, Instagram notifications. WhatsApp messages. The group chats exploded with texts.

“Ramadan Kareem!”
“May this month be full of blessings!”
“Get ready for the fasting struggles!”

Aymen’s fingers hovered over the phone screen as she watched the flood of well-wishes pour in. She blinked, then forced a smile as she looked up at her family.

“Ramadan Kareem, everyone!”

The words escaped her lips effortlessly, her voice warm and cheerful. Zayn and Sara jumped up, their laughter filling the room as they high-fived each other.

Hasan nodded, standing up and grabbing his prayer cap. He turned to Aymen, his voice warm. “You’ll pray at home, right?”

Aymen nodded, watching as they stepped out. The door closed behind them, and the house settled into a gentle quiet. She took a deep breath and walked towards her prayer mat. The night felt different now—so much movement had filled it earlier, but now it was just her and Allah.

She laid out her prayer rug, the soft fabric cool under her palms. Kneeling down, she closed her eyes and whispered, “Ya Allah, let this Ramadan be full of barakah. Let it be a means of nearness to You. Let me find myself in it.”

Her heart felt heavy, but also lighter in a way she couldn’t quite explain. She lingered in sujood, letting her forehead rest against the ground for a few extra seconds, as if hoping to leave all her burdens there.

Later that night, after the kids had fallen asleep, Aymen sat on the bed, phone in hand. Her finger scrolled lazily through the endless stream of Ramadan posts on Instagram—glowing lanterns, steaming plates of iftar, du’as written in elegant Arabic calligraphy.

Ramadan Mubarak.
May Allah accept our fasts.
May this month bring you closer to Him.

Her chest tightened slightly.

The bedroom door creaked open as Hasan walked in, rubbing his neck, his expression drowsy yet alert. He set his prayer cap aside and sat next to her.

“Taraweeh was packed tonight,” he said, stretching his arms. “Felt different after so long.”

Aymen smiled slightly but didn’t respond. She placed her phone screen-down on the nightstand, her fingers resting against the sheets. Hasan noticed the shift in her expression.

What is Halal and Haram?

Grandfather Ahmed gently tapped his stick on the floor. “Allah tells us in the Quran:

‘O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah.’ (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172)

“This means we should only eat what is pure and good—that’s halal food! And Allah also tells us:

‘He has forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah.’ (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:3)

“That means haram foods are things like pork, animals that were not slaughtered the right way, and food made with haram ingredients.”

Sara’s mouth formed an ‘O.’ “So that’s why we check if food is halal before eating!”

Grandfather Ahmed nodded. “Yes! It’s just like a treasure map. Allah has marked the right path for us to follow so we stay safe and healthy.”

Is Halal Just About Food?

Zayn scratched his head. “But Grandpa, is halal only about what we eat?”

Grandfather Ahmed smiled. “Aha! That’s a great question, my boy. Halal is not just about food—it’s about everything in life!”

He counted on his fingers. “There are four important things that should always be halal:

1. What we eat and drink – We make sure our food is halal and pure.

2. How we earn money – We should earn honestly and avoid things like stealing or cheating.

3. The way we speak – We should say kind words and avoid lying or bad words.

4. Our actions – We should do what pleases Allah, like helping others and praying.”

Sara’s face lit up. “So being a good Muslim means choosing halal in everything, not just food?”

Why Does Allah Forbid Haram?

I grinned. "Not yet! A wise man heard about him and told his mother, ‘If he can continue a little longer, let him try. I nodded. "Absolutely. Allah loves when we try our best. As the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'The deeds most loved by Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.' (Sahih Bukhari 6464)"

"Mama, I’m going to try fasting today, just like that boy!" he announced.

We Fear Losing Money, But What About Losing Barakah?

We panic when our bank balance dips.
We stress over missing a work deadline.
We constantly worry about worldly losses.

But do we ever stop to think—what if we’re losing something much more valuable?

What if we’re losing Barakah?

The Prophet ﷺ warned us about a time when barakah—those unseen blessings that make everything multiply—would slowly disappear from our lives.

And standing there, watching that little boy give up on his mother’s attention, I realized: That time is now.

Because look around.

We have more money, but less peace.
We have bigger homes, but less warmth.
We have more “Islamic content” online, but less Quran in our homes.

And the saddest part? We don’t even realize it’s happening.

The Mistake That’s Stealing Barakah from Our Homes

That evening, after dinner, I kept thinking about that little boy.

And then—almost instinctively—I reached for my phone.

But before I could tap the screen, I noticed Sara sitting beside me, swinging her legs, waiting.

She had probably been talking. And I—distracted, half-present—had probably just nodded along, pretending to listen.

The realization hit me like a punch to the gut.

We fear that our kids won’t get into the best schools.
We fear they won’t be “successful.”
We fill their schedules with activities to secure their future.

But the real danger?

We’re pushing their spiritual upbringing to later.

And in doing so, we’re unknowingly inviting emptiness into our homes.

Because when we treat Quran learning like an extra—something “nice” but not necessary—we’re the ones who suffer.

Allah tells us in the Quran:

"And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect." (Quran 65:2-3)

But instead of fearing Allah, we fear falling behind in dunya.

We think we’re too “busy” to prioritize Quran.
We assume Sunday school is enough.
We promise ourselves we’ll “get serious” about it later.

And then—before we know it—our kids stop asking.

Just like that little boy in the park.

When Barakah Starts to Disappear

I didn’t want that to happen in my home.

So I started small

Nothing drastic—just tiny, intentional shifts:

Playing a short surah while the kids got ready for bed.
Reading even one ayah together at night—no pressure, no big goals.
Making sure they saw me reading Quran, not just telling them to do it.

Turning off the background noise and letting something meaningful fill the silence.

And the difference? It was undeniable.

The same child who used to say, “I don’t have time” for memorization? Suddenly reciting new ayahs faster.
The home that used to feel chaotic and rushed? Now carrying an unexplainable calm.
The everyday struggles that I thought were just “normal life”? Somehow, they started lifting.

It was never about finding more time.

It was about choosing what to do with the time we already had.

So, How Do We Bring Barakah Back?

Barakah isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing better.

It’s about realizing that one small effort in the right direction outweighs a hundred distractions.

It’s about remembering that our kids don’t need us to be perfect. They just need us to be present.

He stopped calling for his mom because, eventually, kids stop asking for our attention.
