Your child can recognize Alif, Baa, Taa.
They can point to the letters.
They may even know the sounds.
So naturally, you think:
“Great. They’re ready to read the Quran now.”
But then you open a page and realize something.
They know the letters…
but they still can’t read the words.
And that’s completely normal.
Knowing the Arabic alphabet is only the first step.
What Comes After the Letters?
Before a child can read Quran smoothly, they usually need to learn how letters work inside words.
That means moving through a few simple stages:
1. Recognizing letters confidently
Not just in one form, but when they look slightly different inside a word.
2. Learning the sounds
Fathah, Kasrah, Dammah and other basic sounds need to become familiar.
3. Joining letters together
This is where children begin to understand how separate letters turn into words.
4. Reading short words
Once the sounds and letter shapes feel familiar, simple words start to make sense.
5. Building fluency
Only then does reading Quran begin to feel smoother and less like guessing one letter at a time.
Don’t Rush This Stage
Sometimes parents worry that their child is “behind” because they know the alphabet but still need help reading.
But this stage takes time.
Rushing through it can make reading harder later.
A child may know every Arabic letter and still need plenty of practice before they’re ready to read independently.
That doesn’t mean they’re struggling.
It means they’re still building the foundation.
A Simple Way to Know If They’re Ready to Move Forward
Ask yourself:
Can my child recognize letters without much help?
Can they tell similar letters apart?
Can they pronounce the basic sounds?
Can they join simple sounds together?
If the answer is mostly yes, they’re probably ready for the next stage.
If not, a little more practice now can make everything easier later.
The Goal Is Confidence, Not Speed
Every child moves at a different pace.
Some pick up letter sounds quickly.
Others need more repetition.
What matters most is that they understand what they are reading and feel confident while learning.
At AlQuranClasses, students learn step by step, with lessons adjusted to their level and pace.
So whether your child is just starting with Arabic letters or getting ready to read Quran, they can build the right foundation without being rushed.
